5 It's Killing You!
By Gigi on Friday, 24 June 2011
Yes it is! And when you finally keel over, final breath breathed, final words gasped from ashy lips and rank breath, you'll stand up on the other side and wish you'd taken care of it sooner.

Yes most beloved Missy E, I'm talking to you.
The endocrine gland giving you a myriad of health problems is making your life miserable and while I know you are strong woman that can do it, you have money, great health insurance but REALLY SUCKY doctors. Fire them NOW.
Did you know that you can live a happy and healthy life WITHOUT your thyroid gland? That a very short 1 hour surgery and a small incision that you can cover with bling is all you'd have to suffer through? Did you know that with your money, power and influence you can find a doctor who will prescribe the RIGHT medicine for you to take so you can live happy healthy and whole without the fear of dipping into hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism?
I have known two people who got very successful surgeries to have their thyroids removed. One stuck to conventional methods to keep the thyroid hormone in her body afterwards and another did immense research to figure out what she needed to do for herself and is taking dessicated PIG hormones. It is a crazy schedule, but seeing the fire of life in her eyes and the general good health she enjoys she is living the life!
There are so many black women with thyroid problems, even Oprah fights it, but there are solutions, better solutions than just coping with it all the gatdamb time. Do well for yourself sistah and take care of it please.

3 No McD's for Tunis!
By Gigi on Monday, 20 June 2011
I love my blog list. I have been able to find some jewels from around the World, putting the best of the internet into my RSS feed reader. This morning, one of the blogs I follow from Tunisia (thanking the Google geeks for Google Translate through Chrome), I came across this image.

In recent history Tunisia is credited with the beginning of the Arab Spring, the series of protests by civilians to oust dictatorships that have stripped the countries of their wealth for their own advantage and for the advantage of Western Corporations. It began with Mohamed Bouazizi. He was tired of being harassed by corrupt officials who would not allow him to sell his tomatoes to make a living so he set himself on fire in protest in January this year.
It is interesting that they would be one of the first countries on the Continent of Africa to stand up against McDonalds and other franchises that would seek to undermine local food markets and vendors.
In the West, we have been exposed to the ills of McDonalds, Burger King and Taco Bell among others, who promise cheap food that ends up making people quite ill and does not live up to the advertisements they pepper the highway and television commercials with. More often than not, after purchasing a cheese burger from McDonalds, you end up with this,

The famous movie Supersize Me, produced in 2004 and directed by Morgan Spurlock follows one man (Morgan Spurlock) as he ditches his super healthy diet for McDonald's for one month. By the end of the month all health indicators are very low, a reflection of the kind of health enjoyed by people who regularly eat food from these fast food chains. So it would call to reason that people who have a diet that is rich in nutrients and locally grown would not want the services of a company like McDonalds.
The Tunisian diet consists of a lot of fish, couscous and vegetables prepared in time honored ways that have kept them healthy and relatively free from cardiovascular disease and the complications that result from that kind of sickness. Their diet is also a reflection of their culture and heritage passed down through the ages that makes them unique and interesting, something that must continue to be honored.
The main claim for lifting the ban on franchises is to allow for job creation and increased wealth for the populations, but as many developing country nationals will attest, this does not happen. The high paying jobs are reserved for expatriates and the menial positions whose pay hovers around the poverty line are passed on to the local population. Job creation is desirable, but the cost may prove to be much more than Tunisians may be ready to pay.
Hurrah Tunisia! Keep healthy!
1 Australia Outshines the US

They took amateur cooks from everywhere in the country and had a competition to see who would emerge as the best cook. Competitions like the mystery box where all the ingredients to be used are in a box, immunity pin challenge where the amateur cook would compete with a professional cook for the chance to have immunity or even the pressure tests that would end someone's dreams of becoming the next masterchef.
The focus was entirely on the food, the skill of the cooks, creativity and accepting cooking as an art form. The Master classes held by top chefs Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris were interesting and allowed those of us sitting at home to delve into the kitchen, research farmer's markets and early morning markets where all the top restaurants go to shop, purchase some very exotic spices for dishes we wanted to try out and the best part of all, all the winning recipes along with the recipes from Master class were posted on their website for everyone to use.
Enter Masterchef US. Sigh. From the start of the first season, there was an obvious decision to favor Whitney. The dishes were often bland looking with creativity and honest cooking often taking the back seat to the over dramatization of the characters they chose - something that is obviously lacking in the Australian version of the show - which may be a function of the producers who imagine an audience that is like the Survivor or Jersey Shore audience.
Pish tosh with all this drama nonsense. If there are no good innovative cooks, then there needs to be a wider search. I want to be able to attend a Masterclass conducted by Gordon Ramsey, with all the tips and tricks and shortcuts he would be able to offer. I want to be able to see famous food bloggers/writers come up with crazy challenges, to see that the people who left the show are pursuing their dreams working in kitchens and honing their skills. I want to see members of the Daring Kitchen on the show!!! I am going to try to give season two a go, but if it turns out to be the same igg that infected last season, sorry! I'm going to stick with the very interesting Masterchef Australia that hinges on fresh locally grown produce and making it into delicious food art on my plate!!
Please Masterchef US, we know there is more out there than trumped up and edited drama. We just want food art.

0 The BEST Bread EVAR!!!
By Gigi on Tuesday, 7 June 2011
Last year, when health challenges sprung up alongside the quick desire to be free of all GMO wheat substances, Qalil.com decided to go gluten free.
If you have had the very uncomfortable feeling after you eat bread and end up feeling bloated and uncomfortable and probably even constipated, it may be necessary to ask your health practitioner if you may have gluten sensitivity.
Part of the black experience for many African Americans and Africans is the flatulence that follows ingestion of dairy products, being black ourselves, we decided we would go dairy free as well.
This meant that we either had to give up bread and bread products (including all those yummy pastries) or find gluten & dairy free products that we could enjoy. We happened upon Red Mill's Wonderful Bread Mix that could be used with a bread machine (or not, but since we already had one, yay!) and the success of this bread has been very high.
In the recipe shown in the video we used the entire package and got a very big loaf. If you are good with numbers and have a good scale I would suggest halving the ingredients.
The recipe for the bread can be found at the back of the package, but we found that separating the eggs was inconvenient and we ended up eating too much custard in order to use up the left over egg yolk. Here are our tweaks.
For 1/2 the package
- 1/4 Teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 plus 1/3 cups of almond milk warmed in the microwave
- 2 whole eggs
- 1/2 package of flour (usually between 240 and 245 grams)
- 1/2 packet of yeast (about 4 grams of yeast)
Red Mill Wonderful Breadmix gets our 5 star rating!

WHAT?!
Yup! The sweet gadget you wear proudly on your hip, or hold tenderly in your hands or whip out to impress someone may very soon be linked to CANCER. I know that word brings the fear of Goliath into my heart, I'm not quite sure about you.
In our modern view of cancer, images of suffering come to mind. The pain, the expensive treatment, the complications that may follow and the looming threat of death. While many cancers are treatable, the one being referred to in the article released by WHO, a glioma, typically grows in the spine or in the brain where glial cells can be found. It is a malignant cancer, which basically means it is the killing kind and it is very rarely curable.
A 2010 survey showed that women of color were the greatest users of cell phones in the United States and with the incredible proliferation of cell phone usage in Africa, which recently surpassed the number of cell phones purchased in Europe, we know that even more people of color around the World are using cell phones to communicate with one another.
According to the WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC that included 31 scientists from 14 different countries that met in Lyon, France, exposure to the non-ionizing radiofrequency electromagnectic fields produced by cell phones increases the risk of cancer. This poses a serious public health concern since there are estimated to be well over 5 billion cell phone users globally and rising quickly. Of course more research needs to be conducted, and conducted quickly so that the proper measures are taken.
So what does this mean for you? Cell phones have become vital to the convenience of our lives. A single text message routed to friends and relatives on the other side of the World lets them know you are thinking about them. Cell phone use was responsible for bringing us up to date information from the ground this past February as we watched Africa's second largest economic power relieve themselves of an oppressive dictatorship. We need our cell phones to find out if the restaurant we want to visit is open, but there are ways to use it and reduce the amount of exposure to the electromagnetic waves.
- Purchase a pair of ear pieces (no blue tooth gadgets either. They are just as bad).
- Purchase a phone that will allow you to have a conversation via speaker-phone.
- Turn off your cellphone whenever there is a stretch of time that you will not be using it.
- Put your cellphone in airplane mode so it does not continue to search for a connection to a tower.
- When you are not using it, keep your cellphone away from your body.
0 Affordable Food

Food insecurity
Food insecurity is the state in which people live in hunger or with the fear of starvation. Food security, on the other hand is when all people (within a particular region) at all times, have physical, economical and social access to safe nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (fao.org definition)
The price of gas at the pump has risen by 38% in one year (data) which means that anything that comes to us from somewhere else will cost more because of fuel prices. In the recent past, oil companies have reduced the price of gas a little to assuage the general population in the United States one in six who believe it is not the actual price of gas that increased, but the greed of oil corporations and speculators of gas prices.
There is an argument that food insecurity in the developed World arrived long before the recession and increase in gas prices. If food security means access to safe nutritious food for a healthy life, then the increasing bulge of the collective waistline of these countries is an indication that food security might be more complicated than was first imagined.
At the grocery store, healthy nutritious food, void of any harmful antibiotics and pesticides is the most expensive food and is usually one small section of the store. Many communities do not have stores with organic/non-GMO sections. More and more consumers at the store lean towards this food, opting for the "less is more" principle where nutritional value and safety trump abundance.
As a response to this need local farmers and local farmer groups have come together to provide organic nonGMO produce for their communities at prices that rival grocery store prices. If one thing was exposed by the documentary Food Inc., it was that large farms tend to be controlled by large corporations that impose unsafe food practices merely to provide the population with more food. The only way we can return to having more options and cheaper nutritious food is by returning to local farmers who have safe, globally conscious and responsible farming practices.
Support your local farmer!

Luckily, one of the staff is an amateur cook obsessed with Masterchef Australia and offered to make brunch so our afternoon would be a little more productive.
This is what we had for brunch.

0 Black People: Please Call 911!
By Gigi on Friday, 6 May 2011
Imagine a 55-year old Black man begins to experience symptoms of a stroke. Who do you think he is likely to call for help in this serious emergency?According to newly published research*, this gentleman is NOT likely to call 911 first. He is much more likely to call a friend or family member instead. A Black woman is also more likely to call a friend or family member.
In this startling study, a shocking 75% of African Americans hospitalized for a stroke had called a friend or a family member first. Most of those thought their symptoms were not serious or would resolve on their own.
For many years, researchers wondered why African Americans had much worse outcomes in a stroke than White Americans. This study may offer some answers. Time is crucial in the treatment of a stroke. Doctors will often have to give a clot-busting drug within the first few hours. This helps to minimize the long-term damage of the stroke on the brain.
What is a stroke?
A stroke happens when a blood clot blocks the blood supply to a part of the brain. It can also happen if a blood vessel in or around the brain bursts leading to bleeding. Both of these causes can lead to damage, and even death, to parts of the brain. If a person survives the initial stroke, he or she may face many months or years to recover. Many will not recover fully.
Strokes in the African American community
Strokes hit the African American community pretty hard. Blacks are TWICE as likely as whites to suffer a stroke. They are also more likely to die of the stroke. Do you know what the common symptoms of a stroke are? About 1 in 2 people couldn't identify a single symptom of stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the following are common symptoms of a stroke:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg—especially on one side of the body.
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
What can we all do?Spread the word!
Please tell your family and friends to call 911 if they experience one or more of these symptoms. Quick access to medical care is very important in stroke treatment.
Heavens forbid there is a stroke but we can call family and friends later if it happens.
Please, CALL 911 first!

0 Do you have Orthorexia?
By Gigi on Friday, 29 April 2011
Orthorexia Nervosa
people who develop an unhealthy fixation on eating healthy.
The word orthorexia is derived from two Greek words:
Orthos = correct or right
Orexia = appetite
According to Dr. Bratman's site, the term is meant to refer to people with an UNHEALTHY FIXATION on eating healthy.
Reading excerpts from the book, it becomes quickly clear that Dr. Bratman is one of those individuals whose personality lends itself to extreme expressions and at that point his argument begins to break down.
It is important to note that his emphasis is on people with an unhealthy fixation.
At a time when the World is rising up against corporations that have genetically modified the staples we have become accustomed to, this particular discussion needs to be had and questions need to be asked.
- Can eating healthy become a bad obsession?
- Are there any unhealthy practices people engage in that they believe are healthy?
- What is "eating healthy" ?
What is your opinion? Do you think that orthorexia nervosa is something we all need to talk about?
0 Over reacting to Will.I.Am
By Gigi on Thursday, 28 April 2011
What? That is not the question on everybody's mind since his comment the other day when he sat down to be interviewed by Andrew Goldman from Elle Magazine?
It is difficult indeed to refrain from taking his not-very-carefully-crafted words completely out of context. You don't have to read the entire interview because we have it summarized here.
1. He doesn't know his Pops and doesn't really need him.Of course the only thing everyone is harping on is his comment on condoms. But everyone is over reacting quite a little bit, yeah?
2. His momma whooped his butt
3. He didn't fantasize about women till he was 19
4. Girls owning condoms?! Tacky!
5. USE WIPES
Here, watch this trailer:
This documentary, Let's Talk About Sex, is a candid look at the puritanical attitudes held by our society concerning sex. I caught most of it when it aired on the 9th of April, 2011 and was slightly shocked by some of the comments from teenagers. With so many STDs and the threat of AIDS, there aren't enough of these children thinking about protection. In comparison with teenagers from the Netherlands, American teenagers seem like toddlers when it comes to sex education.
It is so much easier to hold up our hands to cover our eyes and say women and men (but especially women) should not be having sex outside marriage. They are and the fact is that your precious teenage daughter has probably already had sex and probably has a more active sex life than you do. Wouldn't it be prudent then that she carry condoms with her or have them readily available so that when the urge arises she is not caught unaware? As any woman will tell you, men "forget" condoms very often and then PRESS the woman to have sex with no protection.
The truth of the matter is that Will.I.Am is only a product of his society. The assumption that he should have a different perspective on sexual health is wrong. These celebrities and media personalities are just like the rest of us, prone to the same misconceptions about sex, love and money. There is no reason at all to think that if the majority of men think women having condoms in the home is tacky or makes the woman seem too easy then why would he (Mr. I.Am) not be prone to it?
I'm not one of those people who think the Master Pea is gay. I honestly think he is just one of those guys who is okay not having rabid sex with unknown women, and after seeing his comment about wipes (don't be offended people - CLEAN YOURSELVES!) I guess he may be just a little OCD. And you know what? As long as he and his mysterious boo agree on this issue, it ain't none of our business!
It is important to note that at Qalil, we believe it is the responsibility of every woman to make sure that she is informed and protected whenever she has a sexual encounter and that having wipes in your bathroom might be a good idea if you intend to have Will.I.Am over.
Do you think your attitude towards sex is healthy? How did you approach sex education with your teenagers? How do you think it should be approached?
0 GirlTrek .... Who are they?
By Gigi on Monday, 18 April 2011

When I think of all this negative publicity and image, I worry for our young girls growing up now literally, as well as figuratively, smaller compared to their white female counterparts.
Which brings me to GirlTrek.
Which brings me to GirlTrek.
"GirlTrek is a national non-profit movement that inspires and organizes Black girls and women - whose communities are most at risk - to live healthier, more fulfilled lives." These words are a direct quote from their page and I chose to not rephrase because of how powerful I found them to be. They are making a difference in their community so that the change could spread to ours.
We at Qalil.com support your initiative and believe in the power of moving your feet to a healthier you. Keep up the great work!!!
I look forward to participating in one of the 2011 Challenges and hope to be a part of your growing community.

0 Diet Coke for Toddlers (Oh Hell NAW!!!!)
By Gigi on Friday, 15 April 2011
Dear Shay,
My sister gives her toddlers diet coke all day long. When I tell her maybe you shouldn’t because I watched a report on how bad that stuff is for you, she got angry with me. I know it’s none of my business but I hate seeing my nephews drinking it. What should I do?
Ro
Dear Ro,
Let me start off by saying, I am glad that you care enough to bring this to light. Thank you for this question. Now on with it!
DIET COKE for TODDLERS...ARE YOU SERIOUS??!! *Deep breath - goin' to my happy place...wooosaaah*
Like Bernie Mac would have said, next time you run into your sister, you gonna bust her head til the white meat show, there's gonna be some furniture movin' up in that motha..... (J/P)
You got one of two options. You can get the information on the report from online and bring it to her and never mention it again. Or you can stay out of her business if that's what she wants! You can't save the children from their mother if she chooses to not educate herself on the harm that consuming diet coke can do to growing children. You can only control your own actions; so the next time the kids are over at your house, just make sure you give them healthy drinks and snacks. Don't try to be a hero.
Tell yo sister to get her act right or just let her do what she is gonna do, in both cases, remember you can't change the actions of others unless they are open to it.
Better yet, forward the image below courtesy of Term Life Insurance. Almost all the elements listed on the poster apply to her except for the sugar based ones: Diabetes, Obesity and Sugar overload!

0 Public Health Option
By Gigi on Thursday, 14 April 2011
Nothing stirred up unnecessary emotion and violent bursts of "dey tuk urr jobs" from the far right than the idea that the poor would be allowed access to health care. It prompted all kinds of TV segments, investigative reports, movies and articles about the benefits of a socialized health care system.
So when I found this video online, I thought I ought to share it with our growing community of readers just so we could understand why this issue is important, not just to the poor and disenfranchised, but also ultimately to ourselves.
Let us know what you think.
0 Linking HPV and Cervical Cancer
By Gigi on Saturday, 9 April 2011
HPV or Human Papillomavirus has been linked to cervical cancer. If you have been watching TV, then you have heard of HPV and the fact that young girls have it and that cancer is the second highest cancer that kills women.
Now you can either be like me and take off running to the hills, ignore the information or find some way to deal with it. What TV has done is present us with the information without fully explaining what HPV is or how it can lead to cancer.
In layman's terms, HPV is a microscopic organism that is transfered from one person to another by physical contact. When it finds it's way to cells susceptible to it, then it bonds with the surface of the cell. Most times HPV does not lead to cervical (or any other) cancer. However, sometimes (and scientists are still trying to figure out why) some of the genetic material from the virus bonds with the genetic material of the cell causing it to reject proteins that regulate cell development. In those cases, the growth of cells then goes completely out of control resulting in cancer.
It is important to note that not all cases of HPV result in cancer, however, if you remember the story of the Tree Man, you will remember that he suffered a severe case of HPV.

0 Scoop on Poop
By Gigi on Wednesday, 23 March 2011
If there is anything that the new Oprah Winfrey Network programme Ask Oprah's All Stars has taught us, it is that America is obsessed with poop.
It is true that keeping an eye on the substance that comes out of the other end of your mouth tells you a lot about your overall health.
Sometimes the battle to see the substance is the problem and as we sit on the toilet, squeezing every muscle we've got, like a body builder at a competition, the discomfort can make us regret every bad thing we ever said.
Constipation is very uncomfortable, but the good news is that it is treatable and managing your diet to include certain food can go a long way in making sure you remain happy inside and outside the bathroom. Here are a few to include and why.
1. Raw Fruit. Bananas contain high amounts of potassium and fructooligosaccharide. These compounds will help keep your intestinal tract healthy by restoring electrolytes and healthy bacteria that aid digestion. Apples contain lots of pectin that stimulate bowel movement. Melons have lots of fiber. Good for cleaning the intestinal tract.
2. Prunes. Prunes are high in potassium, fiber and iron, which is why older people tend to have a bag of them somewhere in the house. Keep a few on hand for emergencies.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar. This must-have ingredient is the staple for any cook's kitchen. It is high in potassium and must be ingested in its raw form for the beneficial living nutrients and bacteria to do their work. Some studies have also show that it may normalize blood pressure.
4. Aloe Vera. Aloe vera can be seen written on the containers of many cosmetic products. The reason is that aloe vera gel contains up to 75 known nutrients, 20 different minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids and 200 plant compounds called phytonutrients, enzymes and water. Pick up aloe vera juice from your local health store and use it for a quick relief for constipation.
5. Cayenne Pepper, Ginger & Tumeric. Cayenne pepper has been shown to stimulate the digestive tract. It is a hot spice, usually red in color and is typically used in food. You will not get the effects of ginger if you just drink packaged ginger tea or the powdered stuff. Fresh ginger helps maintain regular digestion. Tumeric is considered to be the livers spice, helping it detoxify by assisting enzymes flush out dietary carcinogens.
6. Citrus Fruits. Aside from aiding the body in flushing out toxins, providing your body with lots of detoxifying vitamin C, helping in the absorption of iron from your diet, it jolts that digestive tract into action. Eaten raw, one orange will provide you with 15% of your daily recommended fiber.
7. Raw Vegetables. You cannot go wrong with raw veggies. They provide fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, reduce cholesterol, minerals, to name a few. They are the base of the food pyramid of any health conscious person. Include carrots for pectin, onions to relieve allergies, garlic to flush out toxins and fight stomach cancer, broccoli & cauliflower for fiber and cabbage to soften the stool.
8. Tomatoes. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that fights colon cancer, but also provides vitamins C, A and K, as well as providing fiber. Caution: communities that consume large volumes of tomatoes have also been shown to have high instances of gout. Moderation is the key.
These are just a few of the food types that can bring relief when constipation is a problem. Try to avoid fried food, fatty meat, dairy products, refined and processed food, sugary food, caffeine and carbonated drinks for a happy digestive tract!

0 Fast Food...
By Gigi on Tuesday, 8 March 2011
I remember being super broke in college and wondering what I was going to eat for dinner. With my "just above the poverty line" salary, there were few options and often I would find myself standing in line at the Burger King, crumpled dollar bill in hand, salivating at the prospect of eating one of those fluffy delicious burgers advertised on the big sign outside.
I'd leave with a hot sandwich in hand, pour myself a glass of water, turn on the TV to watch Lord of the Rings (coz I couldn't afford cable) and unwrap my dinner. Each time I'd open the wrap the sight of the sandwich would turn my stomach. The now withered lettuce, pathetically laying against an almost burned patty that could be used as a discus, the smudge of sauce underneath the patty... YUCK.
In spite of all of this, hope beat in my breast every time I thought of going back to Burger King, or McDonalds or Taco Bell. I believed they could deliver what was advertised and every time I was disappointed with the sad sandwich that faced me.
Anyone who has worked in these establishments will laugh in your face when you ask about the ad versus what is placed in the wrapper (maybe that is why they wrap it so tightly, so you'd feel awkward about checking it before you leave the line!!!). Oh well.
Just as a reminder, here is a visual reminder of what is advertised vs what is actually placed in the wrapper! I think we can make better food choices.

0 WTF Files: Ecstacy may not harm your brain
By Gigi on Wednesday, 23 February 2011
What the f**k?! If you are a HuffPost troll-er like I am, you may have seen this study on the front page of the popular news website yesterday. In case you didn't, here is the article. We all know the hyperbole that HuffPost is famous for so I will not even go there, but HONESTLY speaking, can we trust the results of this study?
Studies on ecstasy had been done prior to the one mentioned in the article, but the results that were obtained were considered to be flawed because they were performed on people who belong to the "rave" culture (people who like to party). Rave-ers (is that correct? Someone help!) often go without sleep, combine the drug with alcohol and other unhealthy rave-y practices (other drugs and sex). So a group of scientists convinced NIDA to give them 1.8 million to do further studies and came up with "Ecstasy may not harm your brain".
Jigga what?! You don't say! Well then I guess this means that I can get back to rave-in'.
C'mon now! What has science become?
Any drug, prescribed correctly and not abused has been created by pharmaceutical companies to HELP people. Unlike many others, I don't think the historical roots of the pharmaceutical companies is necessarily evil. They have become more evil than the devil himself, but that is a conversation for another time. Basically, we all know that Ecstasy was not created for the sole purpose of getting people high. It was an anti depressant FIRST. But human ingenuity cannot be held down and someone who was REALLY happy with it decided to take it to a party. Fine, that is my take on it and not historically correct, but you get the point.
My main point - which I am trying to get to - is that Ecstasy, X, E, happy pill, smiley face, is in fact a harmful drug. When it is taken by revelers (the rave people) it is rarely ever taken alone and rarely taken just once. People get hooked on that shit. Alcohol isn't dangerous on its own, in fact it has been shown to have health benefits, but there are still people who are alcoholics, for whom the continued consumption of alcohol will severely shorten their lives.
Mr. Pharmaceutical company has seen how lucrative the business is, doesn't want to stop manufacturing the drug so they publish studies like these for the average American who is not curious enough to do more research.
Be warned!

So does this mean that ecstasy really is the risk-free, hangover-free, miracle drug that lets young ravers and gamers party all weekend without having to pay the price? Says Halpern, “No. Ecstasy consumption is dangerous: illegally-made pills can contain harmful contaminants, there are no warning labels, there is no medical supervision, and in rare cases people are physically harmed and even die from overdosing. It is important for drug-abuse information to be accurate, and we hope our report will help upgrade public health messages. But while we found no ominous, concerning risks to cognitive performance, that is quite different from concluding that ecstasy use is ‘risk-free’."
0 Melancholy Mondays: Easing into Monday
By Gigi on Monday, 21 February 2011
When I was younger, Sundays, not Mondays, were the worst days of the week. We spent most of the morning in Church, rushed home for lunch, raced around getting hair done, homework completed, uniforms ironed and weekly snacks made (my mom made lots of cupcakes) in preparation for the school week.
As an adult I schedule the madness for the week so nothing takes up my weekend and yet I cannot shake that feeling of dread every time the weekend comes to a close and Monday rears its ugly head.
For those of us plagued by familial depression, this is not a good thing. I would like to suggest a few things to help ease you into Monday so that rather than being the day you dread the most, it will be a comfortable lift off to the rest of the week.
1. As you prepare for Monday, play your favourite calming music.
2. Save your Sunday evening for yourself. Take a long bath with special bubbles or prepare to watch a good chick flick or feel good movie.
3. Eat something light so your dreams will not be troubled. Opt for half a plate serving or a light salad.
4. On Friday before you rush out of work, clean up your desk, respond to email messages and take some time to read the news so you can skip the rush of traffic home.
5. Sleep for an extra 15 minutes in the morning (having done most of your preparation the day before) and end your shower with cold water.
6. Play some upbeat music to get you started
7. Don't forget a crunchy fruit (like an apple or pear) to go along with your breakfast!
Let's chase away the blues!

0 The BIG Secret
By Gigi on Sunday, 20 February 2011
There was a time in my life when I thought health fanatics should be locked up in a cupboard until they agreed to sign a document swearing they'd SHUT UP about health issues.
It can be annoying when that one person in your group of friends always comes down on everybody about their eating habits, exercise routine, food supplements and lifestyle choices. I'm beginning to agree with them.
Aside from the recent flurry of news articles about the evil doings of Monsanto (a biotechnology company bent on World Domination...), movies like Supersize Me and information spilling out of various educational institutions about the rise in diabetes and high blood pressure in Black women, my own battle with health issues has helped turn the tide for me.
My doctor prescribed METFORMIN, an anti-diabetes medication with a plethora of side effects, told me to stay away from complex carbohydrates and sugar and sent me on my way. I ended up with hyperpigmentation in the skin on my face, water retention and weight gain even after a strict diet change. Obviously that solution was not working for me so I had to find something else, a more natural solution.
I came across a solution. CINNAMON! I happen to love cinnamon in my tea, porridge, pastries... wherever I could get it. I read many articles including this one, and found that cinnamon acts like insulin in the body. It would break down the sugars in my blood, just as long as I didn't OD on complex carbs and sweets.
I now get my cinnamon supplements from New Chapter, which critically extracts the cinnamon from the bark, and provides it in pill form. No more metformin, no more hyperpigmentation, water retention and weight gain! My sugar levels are back to normal and all I had to do was add cinnamon to my diet. I also have it regularly in my tea and porridge!
Do some research and talk to your doctor about getting off metformin. It really isn't good for you.
